Westinghouse has selected Serco as its lead nuclear safety adviser in the UK, to support the progress of the AP1000TM reactor design though the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process. The AP1000 is one of two designs which recently entered the fourth and final step of the GDA process - which is scheduled to conclude in June 2011. Serco brings experience in UK nuclear assurance and in the development of safety cases for nuclear plants and processes. Coupled with Westinghouse's knowledge of the AP1000 reactor design, this capability will be invaluable in meeting the challenging demands of Step 4. The selection of Serco for this key role in support of the AP1000 GDA work is another indication of Westinghouse's commitment to delivering to the regulators everything which they need in order to give a meaningful GDA approval to the reactor design in 2011.
