Russia wants eco-friendly nuclear power

4 February 2010

Russia’s Prime Minister has announced a new Federal nuclear technology program that will assure the development of environmentally-friendly nuclear power plants. Vladimir Putin stated that “new-generation technologies are to be developed under the program so as to build more efficient and environment-friendly nuclear power plants.” Russia will continue with its so-called closed uranium cycle, in other words; continue to reprocess spent nuclear fuel from the country’s nuclear power plants in order to re-use the uranium into new fuel for next generation reactors. Russia has nine nuclear power plants in operation. The only one of them located within the Barents Region is Kola Nuclear Power Plant near the city of Polyarny Zori north of the Arctic Circle. Kola nuclear power plant operates four water cooled reactors.
