Nuclear approvals at slower rate in China

China has announced that it will slow approvals of nuclear projects after the resumption, which is expected to take place this year, according to an industry expert from a national energy think tank. "China will be cautious in pursuing nuclear power and is likely to approve only three or four projects each year, compared with the boom in new projects during the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2005-2010)," said Xiao Xinjian, a nuclear industry expert at the national Energy Research Institute, affiliated with the National Development and Reform Commission. Uranium Energy Corp. completes sale

Uranium Energy Corp. has completed a second uranium sale which will be reflected in the Company's upcoming Fiscal 2012 Q2 report. A further 60,000 pounds of U3O8 were sold for USD 52 per pound for gross proceeds of USD 3.12 million, bringing the total U3O8 sold during the first half of Fiscal 2012 to 120,000 pounds. Seismic models refined

On January 31st the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) released a new seismic study that will help U.S. nuclear facilities in the central and eastern US reassess seismic hazards. Read more...

B&W to apply fo funding

The Babcock & Wilcox Co. plans to apply for a Public-Private Partnership through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the development of small modular reactor (SMR) technology.

Fuel storage facility

Russia will soon start storing used fuel from its RBMK-1000 and VVER-1000 reactors in a new centralized 'dry' interim storage facility (ISF) at Zheleznogorsk. The first phase of the facility was recently completed and the first RBMK fuel will shortly be delivered. Read more...

Life extension for French NPPs

France's state audit office has concluded that extending the operating lives of its existing nuclear power reactors would be its best option. The Cour des Comptes (Court of Audit), at the request of prime minister Francois Fillon, has released a report into the past, present and future costs of nuclear power in the country.
